The European Directive against greenwashing has entered into force with compliance requirements applicable from 27 September. Under the new rules, producers and manufacturers can no longer make unsubstantiated sustainability claims. All assertions regarding environmental or carbon benefits—including terms such as 'eco-friendly', 'sustainable', or 'carbon neutral'—must be supported by verifiable evidence and certified by independent third parties. This obligation applies to all producers placing products on the EU market, including those subject to Extended Producer Responsibility schemes across packaging, electronics, batteries, textiles, and other regulated waste streams. Non-compliance may result in penalties and enforcement action by national competent authorities.
