The Dutch Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) has determined that McDonald's Netherlands violated rules governing single-use plastic products. Following a complaint filed by the Fair Resource Foundation, McDonald's has been instructed to implement reusable containers for all food and beverage consumption on-premise at its restaurants. Dutch regulations, effective since 2024, prohibit the use of single-use plastic cups and containers for on-site consumption, except where high-quality recycling collection is guaranteed. This enforcement action represents implementation of extended producer responsibility principles requiring businesses to transition away from single-use packaging toward circular, reusable alternatives.
